How Does The Holter Monitor Work

An electrocardiogram (ECG) test is a medical test that is ordered to measure and record the heart electrical activities such as heart rhythm irregularities (arrhythmias) or other ECG abnormalities that may affect normal heart function. However, patients may experience heart rhythm irregularities that do not show up on a regular ECG test.  In these cases, a Holter monitoring test will be the better choice. If irregular heartbeats (arrhythmia) are suspected, your doctor may order a Holter monitoring test to record ECG continuously for 24, 48 or 72 hours to capture the abnormal heart beats or to have an overall/more accurate assessment of your heart rhythms. The Holter monitoring test allows your doctor to see how your heart functions on a long-term basis and to help with more accurate judgment of your heart's problem as well as treatment decisions.

Why Do You Need to Receive a Holter Monitoring Test

A Holter monitor is a small, portable, battery-powered medical device that continuously records electrocardiogram (ECG, which reflects the heart's activities such as rate and rhythms). This testing is ordered when your doctor needs more detailed information about the rhythm/function of your heart to assist his or her diagnosis or treatment. A patient wears the Holter monitor for 24 , 48 or 72 hours (as prescribed by the doctor) as the patient goes about his or her normal daily routines. When the Holter test is completed, the collected data will be analyzed by a certified Cardiology Technologist using a computer program (software). A systemic analyzing report will be generated and interpreted by a cardiologist before a final Holter exam report is created.

What is a Holter Monitoring Test

Essential Cardio Diagnostics Inc.

The Holter monitor is a small portable computer with several leads (or electrodes) that are placed on the skin of your chest with specially designed stickers.  The electrodes collect your heart's electrical signals through the leads into the Holter monitor.  A small pouch holds the monitor, which you wear around your waist or your shoulder to keep the monitor close to your body during the testing period to make sure that the readings are accurate. Your doctor/trained clinic technician will show you how to re-attach the electrods if they become loose or fall  off during recording.

You are encouraged to participate in your normal activities during the Holter test.  You will be directed to record your activities in a Holter Test Diary Sheet. This helps your doctor determine if changes in heart activity are related to your behaviors and activities. Therefore, be sure to record any symptoms such as chest pain, palpitation, dizziness, or other cardiac discomforts you experience during the testing period.

Keep the Holter monitor dry all the time to ensure that the equipment functions properly (no shower or bath with the monitor).  Take a bath or shower before your appointment to have the monitor hook-up. Avoid activities that might lead to the monitor getting wet. Avoid places with magnetic and electrical fields.

After the prescribed testing time frame has passed, your will return to your healthcare provider to have the Holter monitor removed.  You are advised not to remove the monitor by yourself to ensure sufficient and good-quality recording.

Depending on the results of the test, you may need to undergo further testing before a diagnosis is made.
